When Leaders Make Mistakes

8.  Be accountable and responsible for successes and failures.  Own up to mistakes and move forward.

In the military we say that a commander is responsible for everything that happens or fails to happen during that tour of command. Leaders are responsible for a broad range of actions of commission (things they do) and omission (things they fail to do) for the people they serve.

To ensure leaders are moving the organization towards success, they may be formally accountable to a variety of oversight organizations.  Examples are a Board of Trustees or an accreditation commission.  Leaders in the professions of the law, medicine, the military, engineering and others are also accountable to a professional ethos – a belief system that sets limits, shares common values, and has a system of accountability for the actions of those whose are certified as professionals.

Accountability is an important marker of a trusted leader. You will build trust and confidence in your organization when you both celebrate collective success and take personal responsibility for your leadership mistakes. Learn from your successes and your failures, share those lessons with your team, and make the necessary adjustments transparently.
