Celebrate Independence Day

Happy 4th of July! On this special holiday we celebrate the hard earned freedoms of our nation, and we remember the selfless service and sacrifice of those who have sustained the ideals of liberty and justice for all. Today we join together to enjoy each other’s company, to share in festive picnics and friendly competitions, and to marvel at the spectacle of soaring fireworks across the nation and around the world wherever Americans gather in kindred spirit. The 4th of July is symbolized by all those temporal moments, but we also pause to consider the deeper meaning of this day. Its larger purpose is to honor the revolutionary and resilient ideas of our Founders – visionary leaders who imagined a new world in which certain inalienable rights of the individual and equally important responsibilities of government were redefined in a new social compact. Those breathtaking ideas of 1776 are now our enduring values, and they continue to inspire millions around the globe, for they speak in clear and common language to the rights and responsibilities of free people and of governments everywhere.

A special salute on this day of patriotic remembrance to the men and women of our armed forces who have safeguarded our ideals for over two centuries through their courage, compassion, and competence. Their unwavering commitment to serve, often far away from home, and their certain dedication to do the right thing under the most uncertain and dangerous conditions, has been the great defense of our exemplary ideals.

On the 4th of July we celebrate the brilliant heritage and the enduring promise of our United States of America. In doing so we remember the nation’s magnificent ideals of freedom, liberty and justice for all, underwritten by selfless service and sacrifice for the past 238 years.
